The above picture features on of our members Carol Robinson racing toward a gold medal in the the US Master's National Rowing Championships in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Carol, far left, is 61 and is racing in a lower age caregory. By her account it was a very fast race and it wasn't pretty. Carol said that while they took the lead early, she thought she was going to die when the coxswain called for the sprint at the end. In case you were wondering, rowing on the water is just as terrible feeling as it is on the erg, and it's probably worse given the fact that you can see your opponents trying to edge you out.
Carol said her open mouth is a testament to her oxygen depletion and anaerobic state. She said the memory of the pain of various CrossFit WODS helped her tough it out for what she says was one of the hardest races she ever won. Needless to say, she is back training with us here at CFES for the winter and is gearing up for next year's racing season.
What a great success Carol! We love to see our members out putting thier fitness to the test in various forms of competition. For the record, I had to beg Carol to send in this pic and share her gold medal story with us, but this is an accomplishment that I just couldn't let her keep to herself.

Carol Ann - you have been and remain my hero!

That is awesome!
Having rowed so much on the erg and never in the water (I've only canoed and kayaked), I have often wondered how the erg would translate into real water rowing. Seems like an interesting experiment to get a group together and go row in circles somewhere.

That's amazing! Thanks for sharing, Carol. I agree w/Mike, would be cool to go out on open water and see how the erg skills hold up.

Amazing Carol.. I only feel slightly better that it hurts as much to row on the water as in the gym.
On another note.. I have a Tough Mudder spot open and available to anyone who wants it.. I have an unexpected opportunity to be out of town that weekend and can't pass it up..
Spot is free to anyone who wants to have some fun getting dirty.. No $$ necessary..
I believe the plan is for the CFES team to start on Saturday at 9am. But Sean Tally the team captain can confirm details..

BroM: comments from my swimmers who now row for Cal and Washington told me the erg is a fun training tool but nothing like in a boat.

Carol- Congratulations!! That is awesome!! When I finally have more free time for myself, that is what I want to do! I have looked into CSUS Aquatic Center, but can't commit now. Just 10 more years until my girls are in college! You are an inspiration!!!
